"The Cassiar Song"

Written by Sharon Plumb (now Hamilton) in 1992 as Sharon remembered Cassiar in 1974 when she left.

To be sung to the tune of "The Cobalt Song", written by Edith Fowke

REFRAIN:

Oh we'll sing a little song of Cassiar
No you can't go there; it's too far
Oh you Cassiar, where the snow is always green
Where the long asbestos comes from,
And it's cold enough and then some,
Oh you Cassiar, you're the best old town I've seen.

1. We've a pool and a new Post Office, there's big dogs everywhere
A curling rink and a grocery store, the ski hill's over there.
We've got the smartest miners, who always blast on time,
And it's panabodes and tramline loads in Cassiar for mine.

2. You can visit House 130, and gaze on Troutline Creek
Play basketball at the old rec hall and watch two shows a week.
You can dine out at the Cookery, or the snack bar's food is fine,
And it's panabodes and tramline loads in Cassiar for mine.

3. Drive up the road at Christmas and chop yourself a tree.
At Easter don your snowshoes; the pussywillow twigs are free.
Come to Chain Lake for a picnic; the Lion's Park is fine.
And it's panabodes and tramline loads in Cassiar for mine.

4. You can watch TV by ANIK, or hockey at the rink,
Or shovel deep snow off your roof - be careful not to sink!
You can chop off all the icicles that from roof to ground do shine,
And it's panfbodes and tramline loads in Cassiar for mine.

5. But now the streets are empty, the buildings are all gone,
The jackpines and the fireweed will overgrow the lawns,
The open pit's now empty, and the underground won't pay,
So no panabodes or tramline loads in Cassiar today.

6. Oh we'll sing a little song of Cassiar,
No you can't go there; it's too far.
Oh you Cassiar, where the snow is always green,
Where the long asbestos comes from,
And it's cold enough and then some,
Oh you Cassiar, you're the best old town I've seen.
